Sedation Dentistry
Pediatric and special needs patients often benefit from the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or sedation dentistry in order to tolerate dental procedures. The use of these adjuncts help them with their fear or anxiety of being at the dentist, and/or their difficulty with sitting still for long periods of time.
Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most frequently used method for easing mild to moderate anxiety, as well as sensitivity to sounds, smells and sensations associated with dentistry. Recovery is quick so your child can resume normal activities immediately.
Sedation dentistry
Sedation dentistry is done in office, and is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. This level of sedation allows your child to be fully asleep during their dental treatment, and minimizes any negative associations with their dental treatment.
There are several benefits to sedation dentistry, including:
- No memory of undergoing the procedure
- No sense of time while under sedation
- No sense of smell or sound
- No fear or anxiety during treatment
